How do I identify Japanese knotweed?

Look for bamboo-like green canes flecked with purple, growing in a zig-zag from node to node, with heart or shovel-shaped leaves arranged alternately along the stem. In spring it sends up red and pink asparagus-like shoots, in late summer it carries sprays of small creamy white flowers, and in winter it dies back to hollow brown canes that often stay standing.

Is Japanese knotweed illegal to have?
