What we do

Horsetail and marestail — both forms of Equisetum, a plant group older than the dinosaurs — send rhizomes down two metres or more, far deeper than any treatment can reach, and their waxy, silica-rich stems shed weedkiller before it can act. Anyone promising a one-visit kill is not being straight with you: the realistic goal is suppression and long-term management, keeping the weed down year on year rather than eradicating it. Effective treatment means crushing and bruising the stems first so herbicide can penetrate, then repeat applications through the growing season and across several years. For beds and lawns we can also talk through ground-preparation options such as membranes and deep raised beds that let you plant over a cleared area.

Horsetail & Marestail Treatment — common questions

What does horsetail look like?

Field horsetail sends up light brown, cone-tipped fertile shoots in early spring, followed by green summer stems with whorls of fine needle-like branches that look like a bottle-brush or a small fir tree. It never produces flowers. Marestail is the same plant group and is treated the same way.

Can you kill horsetail off completely?

Realistically, no. Its rhizomes run down two metres or more, deeper than any herbicide or digging can reach, so anything that regrows from that depth survives. The honest goal is suppression and ongoing management — keeping it down year after year rather than eradicating it.

Why does weedkiller not work on it?

The stems are coated in a waxy, silica-rich layer that sheds herbicide before it can be absorbed. Crushing and bruising the growth first lets some chemical in, but even then only the top growth and the shallowest rhizomes are affected.

How long before I see a difference?

Top growth is usually knocked back within the first season of treatment. A meaningful, lasting reduction in density takes two to three years of repeated applications at the right times.

Can I lay a lawn or plant beds over horsetail?

Yes, with realistic expectations. We clear the top growth and can install a membrane or deep raised beds before planting or turfing, but horsetail is persistent and can still push up through gaps and along edges, so some ongoing spot treatment is likely.

Is horsetail harmful or notifiable?

It is not a notifiable weed and it is not harmful to touch, but it is invasive and extremely persistent. It is poisonous to horses if it gets into hay, so it matters on grazing land.

What does horsetail treatment cost?

It depends on the area affected, how many visits each season needs and the access. We quote after a site visit, and we are clear from the start that this is an ongoing management programme rather than a one-off job.
