How do I know if my bamboo is a problem?

Running bamboo sends up new canes away from the original clump — in the lawn, along a fence line, in a border a few metres off. If the canes only ever come up in a tight, widening clump and never appear elsewhere, it is a clump-forming type and usually fine to leave. Send a photo and we will tell you which you have.

Can bamboo be killed off completely?

Yes, but only by removing the rhizomes. Cutting the canes down does not kill it — it regrows from underground. Full excavation of the rhizome mass is the definitive fix. Repeated cutting and shoot removal can exhaust a small stand over a couple of years, but for anything established, digging it out is quicker and more certain.

What is a root barrier?

A thick, rigid HDPE membrane trenched vertically into the ground, usually 600 to 750mm deep, around a bamboo stand or along a boundary. Rhizomes hit it and are turned sideways or upwards where they can be seen and cut. It lets you keep bamboo as a screen without it escaping, and the top edge is left slightly proud of the soil so nothing creeps over.

My neighbour's bamboo is coming into my garden — what can I do?

Bamboo encroaching across a boundary can be treated as a private nuisance, in the same way as Japanese knotweed, and the courts have started to hear these cases. In practice it is usually best to talk to the neighbour and agree a barrier along the line, or a dig-out on both sides, before it becomes a dispute. We can survey both gardens and quote the work.

Will digging it out damage my garden?

Excavation is disruptive while it happens — the rhizomes form a dense mat that has to come out in full, so the area is dug over and any nearby planting or turf is lifted. We reinstate the ground afterwards with fresh topsoil, re-turfing or replanting as needed, all agreed in the quote.

Do you use weedkiller on bamboo?

Our approach is physical — excavation and root barriers, all done by our own team. Where a herbicide treatment on cut canes is wanted for a very large stand, applying professional herbicide as a paid service in the UK requires a recognised pesticide certificate of competence (commonly PA1 and PA6), so that part is carried out by a qualified, certificated contractor we work with, to a plan we prepare and manage.

Does bamboo have to be declared when selling a house?

There is no specific question about bamboo on the TA6 form the way there is for Japanese knotweed, but surveyors increasingly note it, and an obvious encroachment problem can still come up in a sale. Dealing with it and keeping the paperwork is the safe course.
