Why a fortnightly gardener beats a big one-off tidy
Plenty of people call us in July for a rescue job: the grass is shin-high, the borders have vanished, and it is a full day with two of us to get it back. We are happy to do it. But if that is your whole garden plan for the year, you are paying more than you think and getting less than you could. Here is the case for a regular slot, laid out honestly.
The cost over a year
A big one-off tidy is a large single number because the garden has been left to run. There is more to cut, more to clear, more waste to take away, and it takes two people most of a day. Then it grows back and, three or four months later, you book another one. Two or three rescue visits a year can add up to more than a fortnightly plan across the same twelve months — and the fortnightly plan keeps the garden usable the whole time, not just for the fortnight after each blitz.

The garden never gets away from you
The real value is not financial. On a fortnightly visit through the growing season, nothing ever gets to the crisis point. The grass is cut before it is a hayfield. Weeds come out while they are seedlings, not established clumps with a root system. Hedges get a light trim on schedule instead of a hard reduction that leaves them brown. Each visit is a small improvement rather than a recovery, so the garden is somewhere you would actually sit for the whole summer.
- Growing season (roughly April to September): fortnightly is the sweet spot for most Wirral gardens — a monthly gap in June means the first half of every visit is just catching up.
- Winter (October to March): visits usually drop to monthly and shift to leaf clearance, tidying and checking the garden over.
- Big or high-visibility gardens: sometimes weekly in peak season; a front garden in Heswall or a rental being marketed needs to look sharp every week, not every other.
The same person learns your garden
With a one-off, whoever turns up is meeting your garden cold. With a regular slot it is the same gardener every visit — on our plan, that is Marcos personally. Over a few months that means someone who knows the awkward shady strip that never dries, which shrub is worth keeping and which is a weed that got big, where the bulbs come up so the mower avoids them, and what you like the place to look like. That knowledge is the difference between the garden being maintained and just being cut. We also cover Bebington and Bromborough on regular rounds, so a fortnightly slot there fits an existing route.
When a one-off is the right call
One-off visits absolutely have their place: an end-of-tenancy or pre-sale clearance, a garden you have just taken on that needs resetting before any routine makes sense, or a one-time job like a hedge reduction or a patio clean. Often the sensible pattern is a one-off tidy to get the garden back to a baseline, then a fortnightly or monthly slot to hold it there — once a garden is already under control, keeping it that way is far less work than the reset was.
